The Mustache Rig: A Unique Lure for Trophy Pike

It’s quite rare for me to dedicate an entire article to a single lure. Usually, I prefer discussing entire lure families—like jerkbaits—letting anglers pick their preferred models. But now and then, a lure stands out so much that it deserves its own spotlight. That’s the case with the Mustache Rig from VMC—a pike magnet that has completely changed how I approach certain spots and conditions.
Initially under the radar, this odd-looking lure—with its flat head and bucktail dressing—has quietly built a reputation. What was once just curiosity has turned into confidence, and today, it’s a proven weapon for big fish. We now understand better what makes it so deadly… and how to get the most out of it.
A Unique, Highly Effective Design
The Mustache Rig is built on a deceptively simple but brilliant idea. It consists of a round head made of zinc (for the sinking version) or wood (for the shallow model), dressed with a bucktail skirt—those hollow hairs that come alive with the slightest movement. A screw at the rear allows you to attach a soft plastic trailer of your choice. The internal frame lets you rig it however you like.
While the setup looks basic, it comes to life when retrieved slowly in a straight line. No fancy techniques required—the Mustache Rig does all the work, and often outperforms more complex presentations.
More Strikes—And More Violent Ones
Field testing says it all: the Mustache Rig triggers strikes where other lures fail. It activates sluggish fish, selects for better quality pike, and causes some truly brutal hits. The mix of vibrating bucktail and mobile trailer creates a shockingly lifelike impression. The lure’s flat head acts like a scoop, displacing water like an oversized crankbait, while the bulky, hairy body creates a strong visual and vibratory profile.
Whether pike see it as a rodent, a threat, or just an easy meal, doesn’t really matter—they hit it. Hard.
Rigging Tips: Get It Right
Sold without hooks or trailer, the Mustache Rig gives you the freedom to rig it to your liking. To reduce missed strikes, I highly recommend upscaling the front hook. On the large model, I always run a Pike Chain rig in size L with two 2/0 treble hooks. On the smaller sizes, the size S Pike Chain is perfect.
Proper rigging often makes the difference between a lost fish and a trophy landed.
Surprisingly Easy to Use
Despite its hefty profile, the Mustache Rig is shockingly easy to handle. Unlike other big baits that require advanced techniques or experience, this one just needs a slow, steady retrieve. That’s it—no tricks, no twitching, and it’s fishing effectively from the first crank.
That said, the original model is quite large and weighs around 130 g, so a heavy-duty rod setup is necessary.
Three Sizes, Two Versions—Endless Options
The Mustache Rig comes in three standard sizes:
- 30 mm / 40 g – for deep water and large pike
- 20 mm / 20 g – highly versatile
- 10 mm / 11 g – great for finesse or fast-paced fishing
The wooden shallow models are excellent for ultra-shallow water or retrieving over dense weed beds—where few other lures can go.
Two shallow versions in wood round out the lineup:
Tweak the Color, Depth, and Trailer
The Mustache Rig reaches peak performance when you play with three key variables:
- Color, which should match water clarity, lighting, and conditions.
- Running depth, adjustable by adding a sinker to the frame (with up to 40 g added, you can reach 8–10 meters deep).
- Trailer choice, which affects the vibration, profile, and swimming action.
For the larger models, use big trailers like the Soft Otus, Soft Peto, or Soft Olio. For smaller sizes, try a CrushCity Kickman 5" or The Curl 5"—ideal for medium-action rods (10–40 g).
Pro Tips and Warnings
Watch out for bite-offs! Pike often target the lure’s head, so the risk of cutting your leader is high. I recommend at least 0.80–1.00 mm fluorocarbon, or even better, braided titanium (70 lbs and up) for total security.
Don’t strike too early. Pike sometimes follow the lure and just nip the trailer before fully committing. Stay calm, keep retrieving—when the proper strike comes, then set the hook hard.
Conclusion: A Must-Have in Your Pike Arsenal
There’s no such thing as a commercially successful lure without real-world performance—and the Mustache Rig more than delivers. Its ability to provoke bites from passive or pressured fish makes it a game-changer. With its wide variety of sizes, colors, and trailer combinations, it’s more than just a fad—it’s a new standard.
Clear out a space in your tackle box—or two. You’ll need it.
